South Korean Actor Oh Young-soo Convicted of Sexual Assault, Receives Suspended Sentence
A South Korean court on Friday found veteran actor Oh Young-soo guilty of sexual assault and sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
The Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court found that Oh, 79, had twice sexually assaulted a woman in 2017. The first incident occurred when Oh hugged the woman without her consent while they were walking together. The second incident occurred when Oh kissed the woman on the cheek without her consent outside of her apartment building.
Oh denied the allegations, claiming that he had only hugged the woman to comfort her and that he had kissed her on the cheek as a sign of affection. However, the court found the victim’s testimony to be credible and found Oh guilty of both counts of sexual assault.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the court also ordered Oh to complete 40 hours of sexual violence treatment.
Oh is best known for his role as Oh Il-nam, the elderly player 001, in the Netflix survival drama series “Squid Game.” He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Television Series in 2022 for his performance in the series.
