BTS member Suga has made headlines recently after being involved in a drunk driving accident while serving his mandatory military service. On July 7th, a netizen posted a petition on an online community asking the Military Manpower Administration to impose a strict punishment on Suga, suggesting a five-day extension of his service through the e-People’s Petition.
On the night of July 6th, Suga was found lying on the street in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, after riding an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol around 11 PM. His blood alcohol content exceeded 0.08%, leading to a violation ticket and the revocation of his driver’s license.
Suga’s agency, Big Hit Music, responded to the incident, saying, “We apologize for disappointing many people with our artist’s inappropriate behavior. We will accept the appropriate disciplinary action from his workplace for causing social controversy as a public service worker.“
Despite the petition, a Military Manpower Administration official told Xports News, “There will be no disciplinary action such as an extension of Suga’s service period,” explaining that “social service workers are only subject to disciplinary action for incidents that occur during work hours. Outside of work hours, they are subject to the same laws as ordinary citizens.”
Suga’s situation could become more serious. If the vehicle involved is a high-speed electric scooter with a larger engine, instead of the electric kickboard mentioned by Suga and his agency, he could face a fine of up to 10 million won or even imprisonment.
