Jeon Do-yeon, the acclaimed South Korean actress, recently opened up about the unexpected challenges that followed her historic Best Actress win at the Cannes Film Festival.
The star, known for her roles in films like “Secret Sunshine,” “The Shameless,” and “The Housemaid,” has been a Cannes regular, even serving as a jury member. But it was her 2007 Best Actress win that changed everything.
“After winning, I felt like this massive star,” Jeon Do-yeon shared on the YouTube channel fairyjaehyung. “I wondered what would come next, but the scripts just weren’t there.”
She explained that her pre-Cannes project, “My Dear Enemy,” suddenly felt overshadowed. “People questioned why I’d choose that film after Cannes,” she said. “I still love that movie, so I didn’t understand why they reacted that way. That was the beginning of my struggles.”
The actress felt increasingly disconnected from the public. “Everyone thought I had scripts piling up, but it wasn’t true,” she admitted. “I even asked my manager if he was hiding them!”
Jeon Do-yeon described the experience as a “gilded cage.” The pressure of being called the “Cannes Queen” was immense. “I had so many ideas for roles, but nothing felt right,” she said.
