Yoo Seung-ho is stepping out of his comfort zone for his latest project. The seasoned actor recently opened up about his decision to take on a theater role in Angels in America during an appearance on JTBC’s Newsroom.
“I felt stuck doing the same old thing,” Yoo Seung-ho confessed. “I needed a challenge, something new. That’s why I decided to take on a theater role. It was like a spell. I wanted to follow my heart without overthinking it.”
Playing a member of the LGBTQ+ community is a big departure for the actor. “I’m wearing bracelets, necklaces, and even painted my nails! It’s wild,” he laughed. “Looks matter, but it’s what’s inside that truly counts. I’m doing things I’d never do normally.”
The role has also been emotionally demanding. “The play tackles heavy topics like homosexuality, racism, and religion. I knew nothing about this world, so I did a ton of research. My character’s HIV-positive, so I lost weight too. It was tough, but I gave it my all. Even the intimate scenes were challenging. Looking at a guy with love in my eyes? Not easy! But my co-star was amazing, and I tried to see him as someone I love, no matter what.”
Reflecting on his 25-year career, Yoo Seung-ho shared his philosophy on life and work. “Every day is a new beginning. I don’t want to look back with regret, so I focus on the present.”
The actor found a new passion in his late twenties. “I realized how cool it is to live different lives through acting. That’s when things got really interesting.”
Beyond acting, Yoo Seung-ho has a heartwarming dream. “I want to open an animal shelter. It’ll cost a lot, so I’m saving up. Acting is my job for now.”
As for the future, Yoo Seung-ho is taking it one step at a time. “I’ll keep acting as long as people want me. Until then, I’ll just be myself and keep thinking about life.”
